Batik is on the move/Groove with a splash of color and a dash of patriotism

Batiks are ubiquitous in the fashion industry of Malaysia. What a pleasant surprise to see that they are also scattered into the National Art Gallery also!

"Batek is on the move/GROOVE with a splash of colour and a dash of patriotism"

Here are two works by Chuah Thean Teng, considered by many to be the "father of Malaysian batik painting." He will be featured in a solo exhibition at the National Art Museum this coming November.
The Japanese however began painting with wax and dye long before Chuah Thean Teng came into existence.  Here is a contemporary Malaysian artist inspired by the Japanese version of batik painting, which they call Rozome.

How exciting to find some more Fine Art batiks at the Craft Complex!

Batik paintings in Malaysia are usually brought over from Indonesia, where labor is cheaper. It is difficult for Malaysian artists to compete with their low prices.

You can tell it's Friday in Malaysia from the batik uniforms that all Malay school children wear.

The beauty of wax.

It is difficult to decide which I like more, the rhythm of tjap batik...
or the more free-flowing style of tjanting batik.

More batik paintings from Indonesia
Even the dolls in Malaysia wear batik!
